Shop update: Categories!
As many of you will have noticed, we launched the long awaited ShopBuilder about a month ago and as promised we're going to have a continuous stream of new shop features coming as quickly as we can bake them in the Moonfruit oven. (We don't really bake our software, but you get the idea).
We've had a great response to the shop launch with over 45,000 shops having been built in the last month. And we've also had a lot of feedback from you about the additional features you'd like us to build as quickly as possible. We love the feedback, so keep it coming.
So first out of the oven is the new Category feature. Many of you were asking for it, so here it is.
Shop homepage with Category links
Categories allow you to create groupings for your products and have different ways of ordering and arranging them to suit the different audiences you may be addressing or targeting. In the shop manager you can now add categories and assign products to categories. One product can be in more than one category and the list order of products in each category can be different.
Categories have their own URL so you can link directly to a category sub heading. We've also created a new link type on the link tab in the Editor so that any image or link can link to a category allowing you to construct your own navigation. You can add category links direct from the menu of your site too, so that your normal site menu can offer different category pages.

Link editor with new category link type
And if that wasn't enough, there is also a new category link widget in the File Manager which automatically creates a list of all your categories and links to each of them. You can customise the style of this category link widget and change the button style, font and colours.
The mobile and Facebook views have also been updated to incorporate the category view. So if you have more than two categories, your Facebook shop will show the category names and images, which link through to the category product lists. And on the mobile view you can navigate to the category types from the drop down at the top of the page.

So that's about it for now. All these images are taken from our shopdemo.moonfruit.com website, so feel free to have a look and a play there.
So what's next?
We're working on some improvements to the shipping options and the ability to change the quantities of items on the checkout page - so your customers can buy multiple numbers of an item more easily. These should be out before the end of the year (testing permitting). Then early next year we will bring out product variants, and after that basic stock control and discount/coupon options. After that? Well, some more stuff - helped by the feedback we get from you guys.

Well done, cant wait so excited. This just all sound fantastic. To be able to give options and differant quanititys to products will certainly help my customers to be able to buy amounts of differant products packed differantly the way they wont all packed ready for freezing on delivery. all thay have to do is open the freezer and put it in. Great news.
Great to see continuous improvement, but may I request in the strongest possible way that changing quantities is needed at the product view page. I need my customers to be able to order how many of each item they require before they reach the checkout page.
Hi Tigger,
Thanks, we're certainly keen to get the product variants out as soon as we can in the New Year.
Good work with your site btw I hope the business does well via the site.
One recommendation to speed up page loads is see what you can do to minimise some of your image sizes. If you get all your images under the 200KB mark (most are OK just a couple of files in the 1-3MB range) you should see a big improvement on how quickly some of your pages load.
The 200KB size is big enough to retain resolution and quality on the photos but small enough to have less impact on the page loads.

This is awesome...Variable shipping rates are essential! I will be designing web sites through Moonfruit and then handing them over to my customers. The shop builder is so easy to use, a major draw for my customers.

Hi Arkwright, our next release (before Xmas) is focusing on improvements to the checkout page (quantities & improved shipping). Changing quantities on the product page is on the drawing board and is likely to be included in a release after the New Year.
Flaxi, thanks for the feedback, glad to hear you like its simplicity.

Thanks Joe and Moonfruit Team for the updates and hard work! Looking forward to all the upcoming and future updates for the new e-commerce...Congrats to all....

I'm being requested to make a new payment, but I don't think my site is large enough to pay the extra? I think it is still small enough to be free! I have not sold anything through the website. I'm a pensioner just selling the odd painting when I'm lucky enough!
We want different payment gateway that support more currencies so we can use this shop feature as well
Hi,
Fabart: Can you let us know the username for your account, please?
Pijjama: I'm afraid that Paypal is the only option at the moment, but we aren't ruling out adding additional gateways in the future.
HTH,
Gary
Hi Guys,
Nice to see shop being improved.
Would appreciate other payment gateways being added. Not a big fan of Paypal for small businesses... any chance of Sagepay or similar?
Hi Simmons,
We don't have any immediate plans to offer additional payment gateways, but I wouldn't rule this out for the future.
HTH,
Gary
Hi, Guys
Think we would all like to see more payment gateways as this would give our customers more payment options, and possible help us generate more orders.
Cheers

hi! I'm having problems with using the shopbuilder and i can't find on this website any help on how to use it. i played around with it a little bit and was able to link my twitter to it but for some reason it wont let me link my facebook to it. like i click the link that says "sign in" or whatever and it just does nothing. it's all really confusing. is there something i havent signed up for or something?
Hi Jess,
You will need to enable Facebook Connect in order to set up your Facebook shop - you can do this from People -> Settings.
HTH,
Gary
Hi there, I have to contact you here because the support system is down - I cant submit a ticket as it keeps saying 'error'
my issue is below:
I have just built this site for a friend and now I am trying to set up the facebook shop by following your instructsions from the forum:
Click on People (toolbar) > Settings (tab)
At the bottom of the page look for "Link your page to Facebook"
Click on "Fix"
Now select the first option (visit the Facebook Application creation page)
Select “Create new App”
Login to your Facebook account and select “Allow”
Register your website
Confirm your action by following the security check
Click on the first option (Website)
Now enter full url of what you have chosen as your 'Preferred site address' e.g. http://www.yoursiteaddress.com
Follow the onscreen instructions
Problem is when I get to the 'visit facebook application creation page link (see above) nothing happens - it just takes to the FB login page, If I login I am just on the normal FB page for his business.
I dont get anything relating to app creation etc at all.
Do you know why this is?
Thanks,
Star
So chuffed that I can now use moonfruit to build my online shop, I have been looking to find the right shop software for a while and now I can carry on using moonfruit, well that's just super-duper!!!!! :-) I will def be upgrading the site and growing the shop. The new features mentioned are a big must for my business and I look forward to being able to make use of them. Can I ask is there are plans to add a feature where I am able to specify how many of a particular item are available before they are sold out as I sell vintage 1 offs and items where I have a limited amounts which would be difficult to keep on top of without an automatic out of stock feature.
Regards,
V
Hi Vicki,
Thanks for the kind words - we're glad to hear you like the look of the shop. In answer to your question, we are indeed going to be adding a stock control feature - this should be out in the new year.
HTH,
Gary
Hey guys,
great to see some movement on the shipping options but I still have the issue of needing to set different rates for different products not just international & domestic. At the moment I've had to set the shipping rate to cover the price of posting heavier items like candles but its a bit much to be charging £3.95 to post 1 card. Is this a feature that will be available soon as I have missed out on quite a few Christmas sales because of it.
Hi Mistyforce,
I'm very sorry - fully variable postage prices is something that we are looking into, but it is not going to be available this side of Christmas.
HTH,
Gary
I wish this shop feature could have Real (R$) currency. Here in Brazil we are very excited to use and implement our websites and, of course, offer as many options we can to our costumers when building websites. So, I hope you guys include "Real" currency for us... Thanks
Bruno Henrique - CEO DAF Solutions in Brazil
Hi Bruno,
I'm afraid we are somewhat restricted by what Paypal offer through their API, but I will certainly pass the request on.
HTH,
Gary
Is paypal the only option in setting up in receiving payment or using paypal gateway on your shop template?
Hi Romie,
Paypal is currently the only gateway available, but your customers do not need a Paypal account - there is an option to pay using a debit or credit card.
HTH,
Gary
Hi, The shop is great however I have had real difficulty editing the images on there, for instance when I upload my photos in to the moonfruit picture gallery they come out brilliantly and the right size, however in contrast when they are uploaded in the moonfruit shop, it zooms in on my pictures meaning you cant see the whole product! Is there any way to correct this? This is the only thing that is stopping me from upgrading my account to have an online shop!!! Please let me know
Hi,
I would really appreciate new payment methods added, i think this is a must.
Also, i wish each product description page could be edited individually without the edits changing the description for all products.
And a way of the customer selecting more shipment option prices.
Thanks
