Build a Website for Your Small Business: 5 DIY Services

By Sarah Jacobsson Purewal, PCWorld

Your company's online presence begins and ends with your website. But hiring a designer to dress it up can be expensive--and that's not even including the cost of a custom domain name and website hosting. Fortunately, you have do-it-yourself options.

If you need a basic website to house and promote your business, these five services let you design, publish, and host your site for free - or for a small monthly fee - all from the comfort of your browser.

These services all feature "What You See Is What You Get" (WYSIWYG) website editors. In other words, you don't have to know a single line of code in order to build your own, professional-looking business website. Next, to make your brand's look and feel match your print materials, here's how to create print materials such as business cards and brochures.

Moonfruit is a free website host and editor with a plethora of fresh designs and detailed editing options. The service is moving away from its early focus on building Flash-based sites, which can't be viewed on iOS devices and are typically hard for search engines to find. Now, a site you build in Moonfruit is designed to render in Flash, HTML, or mobile HTML5, depending on how the user is accessing it. And soon there will be tools for building Facebook Pages.

Getting Started Getting started on Moonfruit is quick and easy--although mastering its site editor takes quite a bit of practice. First, simply choose a theme, which you can change later, if you desire. The modern-looking, business-oriented themes include IT Services, Accounting, Spa, Bakery, and Law. All are fully customizable, but if you don't see one that appeals to you, you can choose a dark- or light-skinned blank theme and build your site from the ground up.

Building and Editing Your Site Moonfruit has a ton of design options for building a site from scratch. Next, you can dive into the webpage editor. The Flash-based editor is full-featured but can be a little intimidating. Luckily, Moonfruit has a 40-page Beginner's Guide.

You can edit the Page Master, which houses the elements that will appear on every single page of your website (such as navigation links and your logo), or you can edit pages individually. The Webpage editor's toolbar includes options such as Save, Edit, Design, and Admin. Clicking these either opens a menu of additional options or brings you to other pages where you can set up various services.

While you're logged in to the editor, clicking any element on your website will open the element's "Editor" palette subwindow with tabs for options for editing text and styles, and more. Uploading files from your PC is a snap. Just click on the Files button in the toolbar to upload multiple images, video clips, or audio clips at once. If you'd rather use clip art or stock photos, Moonfruit has a library of images and multimedia elements.

Once you've finished editing your website, click Save and your site will go live.

Pricing Moonfruit's basic services are free for one website with up to 15 pages, 20MB of online storage, and 1GB of monthly bandwidth. To use Moonfruit's free features, you also have to update your site once every six months.

For those who need more, Moonfruit has packages from $6 to $50 per month ($54 to $450 per year if you pay annually). Its Business package is $25/month or $225/year, offering 15 websites with unlimited pages, 2500MB of storage, and unlimited bandwidth. That package also features an $80 Google AdWords voucher, email support, two domain names (with email addresses), multiple site administrator accounts, and PayPal integration.

Moonfruit Pros: Extremely customizable designs; plenty of attractive themes; small and unassuming ad on free pages; multiple packages; publishes in Flash, HTML, and mobile-optimized HTML5.

Moonfruit Cons: The WYSIWYG editor has a steep learning curve.

Cool shops on Moonfruit using the HTML widget

Well, we told you the HTML widget would open up new possibilities for e-commerce. And it looks like a few of our cutting edge users have started to integrate full-blown Amazon stores into their Moonfruit websites. Clever them ;-)

Of course this won't stop us working on our own e-commerce upgrade which is due out mid next year, but it certainly gives you something to get on with.

So how have they done this?

So first things first, the new interface. For those of you who didn't see our sneak preview, this is what it looks like.

New release - 20th July 2009 - Membership tweaks

Following the successful release of the Membership features in May, we had some requests for a few tweaks and additional options. So being the friendly and agile guys we are, we thought we'd do them (while continuing with the other things we're working on).

So today we published a few minor adjustments to the Membership settings to allow you to:

  • Set a redirect page after login
  • Disable Facebook Connect login

The first of these changes was much requested, allowing you to send your members to a specified 'success' page after they have logged in to your site. This is great for redirecting them to the 'members home page' or whatever page you want to send them to. You can set the 'post login page' on the Settings tab of the 'People' section when editing your site.

The second change allows you to disable the Facebook Connect login options for members. Facebook Connect allows new or existing members of your site to login using their Facebook credentials, so there is no need to create a new user account on your site. This streamlines the join process and makes it easier for you to attract new members. It also ties together with the ability to post out a note to your Facebook wall from the 'Send a message' section of 'People', which is a great way to invite people to join your site. However, the new setting allows you to turn this off, which some customers (particularly businesses users) had requested. Again you can change the settings to disable Facebook Connect on the 'Settings' tab in the 'People' section.

Things we're working on now are the final delivery of the HTML widget (currently available in beta, but now that Firefox 3.5 is out we can release fully), and some changes to the edit environment to integrate new technology on the path to the new e-commerce features.

We hope you like the changes!

Final creative prize for a Macbook Pro

Thank you all for making this competition so special. The creative entries have really blown us away and we'll be continuing to pick through them all, post up the best and create a gallery to pay our respects for all those who have entered. (And maybe a few discretionary prizes too ending Friday 10th July 3pm BST).

But we thought we'd end this crazy Twitter promotion with one more Macbook Pro prize. And this will go to the creator of the best website on Moonfruit.com. Anyone can enter from new or old customers, friends or foes, and you certainly don't have to enter if you don't want to ;-).

The website contest will run until 17th July (next Friday 3pm BST) at which point we'll pick and announce the winner.

Judging a website is going to be tricky, so when you enter your website we want you to tell us why it's special or innovative and why you think it should win. All entries should be as comments on this blog and we'll pick the winner from there. We'll pick the site that is most true to its stated objective and inspires us as a great example of what a website can do. Build it about something you're passionate about and are interested in.

Thanks again for all your support and may the Fruit be with you. Always.

Rules

  1. Create a website on www.moonfruit.com
  2. Post it on this blog with your reasons for why it should be picked
  3. One website entry per person (and one post please!)
  4. Winner will be posted to this blog on 17th July at 3pm BST (GMT+1)
  5. Good luck!

Check the full details of the competition at http://www.moonfruit.com/macbook-pro.html and follow us @moontweet to find out who the winners are each day.

Happy tweeting!

"You actually cannot tell this isn't professionally built"

Now that's the kind of customer review we like to read about Moonfruit and our website builder! Have a read for yourself:

http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/internet-sites/moonfruit-com-1/1226440/#rev

It's great to get this kind of feedback (actually both positive or negative) as it helps us keep in touch with what people want. And with the power of the social web nowadays getting reviews in public forums is always a boost.

So thank you mysterious reviewer "CokaCola" whoever you are ;-)

How to create members only/client only pages of your website

Members only areas or client only areas can be useful ways of providing privileged information to a select group of your site visitors. This can allow you to create better relationships with these people and use your website to present or distribute information privately with a guest list that you directly control. It’s one of the features that makes Moonfruit unique among other website builders, and extremely powerful.

We've also been asked about 'paid membership'. By using Groups to create a set of VIP members it is possible to charge a fee before adding a member to that group, though this has to be done manually. So here’s how to do all of these things.
